The weekend of September 25th and 26th Jochem Naafs will give a lecture and teach a workshop on process dramaturgy at Tanzfabrik Berlin during the Perfect Wedding festival. What does affect you when you are making a performance? Is it the performer or the technician you’re working with, or are you also influenced by the technology itself, by the chair in the studio, by the sounds from outside? Every process has its dramaturgy, its time based story with interacting actors. During this workshop we will become aware of the human and non-human “actors“ that are working with or against us in a creative process. We will work on a small becoming-performance. By being aware of the relations between makers, objects and questions in various phases of the process we will be able to process, and then stimulate the practice of others. The workshop will start with a public lecture that is used as a theoretical framework for processing dance in process.

Jochem Naafs is a researcher, dramaturge, writer and live artist based in Utrecht and Berlin. He studied Theatre and New Media Studies (MA) at the Utrecht University. In his work he constantly merges theory and practice. Currently he is working as a researcher for the research group Theatre-making processes (HKU) and as a lecturer for the Professional School of the Arts Utrecht. He worked as a dramaturge with Powerboat, Michael Pinchbeck, Jack Gallagher and participants of Choreoroam, wrote articles for various organisations and magazines. As a live artist he created the lecture performance Jij, and the performance Pauze.

Recently I published my master thesis Theatre Studies online. It is available in Dutch on Igitur, the publishing and archiving service of the Utrecht University. You can access it here: studenttheses.library.uu.nl. A revisited version in which I propose a way to use the analytical method as a dramaturg will be available soon via the Utrecht School of the Arts.

Abstract (for Dutch see below)
In this thesis I elaborate on how a heterogeneous and relational perspective can provide new insights in collective transdisciplinary making processes. The main focus is on the creative process of making live art. Live art, in almost every form, is a product of multiple actors; both human (director, performers, spectators) and non-human (props, technology). In what way could a heterogeneous and relational perspective add to the knowledge of theatrical making processes? By using the actor-network theory of Latour, Law and Callon to develop an analytical model this paper suggests a possible method to analyse these processes. This paper aims at gaining knowledge of the making process of live art by focussing on the relations between the different actors in the ever-changing process. The analytical model that is developed takes the questions formed by the actors as a starting point. By selecting one question that is an obligatory passage point for all the actors it is possible to place the actors in their relative positions. Then the method looks at the translation by the actors of this question. By repeating this several times the changes in the making process can be determined.

Abstract

I think about my role of the dance dramaturge in the creative making process. On which moment do I have to act in what way? Do I have to ask questions and what kind of questions should I ask? Do I have to tell what I see or rather what I miss? Should I suggest and what would I like to reach with these suggestions? Can I introduce theory into the process or should we really start working in the studio now?

Currently I work on a translation of my theoretical research on creative making processes into the practice of the dramaturge. In principle you can divide any making process into phases. An artist can go one or several times through any phase during a creative making process. As a dramaturge you go through these phases as well. But, more interesting, you can try and track in which phase the artist is. And then see how you can use this knowledge as a dramaturge.

As a dance dramaturge you don’t work for a choreographer, but with a choreographer. You are making together. Dramaturgy is not only there in the performance; it plays a role during the entire making process. Dance dramaturgy is processing dance: it is both being in the process and dealing with the process.
