Lotte Wijers

Biografie Lotte Wijersfoto

When Yves Klein...

When Yves Klein jumped into the air from a wall above the concrete of a street in his photo called Leap into the Void (1960), he made a marvellous statement. As if he was saying; anytime you want to, you can jump into the void. This void can be seen as a neutral zone where one is inspired to pay attention to ones own sensibilities, and to “reality” as opposed to “representation”.

To me, dance dramaturgy is like a leap into the void.
Together with the choreographer, the dramaturge explores the immense possibilities of the dance material. We can draw upon all our experiences of the world; everything could be a source of inspiration for making dance. As a dramaturge, I try to activate an awareness of the possibilities of the material, and the way it could be experienced.

It is very important to me to open up to the flow of the process of making a dance production while working as a dramaturge. You have to tune in to the dance material, and the ideas behind it, but also keep a certain distance to keep a free mind. To be able to see other ways, other layers, other possibilities as well. Never lose sight of the fact that it is an ongoing process. I try to be open to things that happen.

I feel excitement everytime I get ready to leap into the void.
